Transport & Logistics
The Black Country’s central location makes it the ideal hub for logistics and distribution companies. The region is served by the M6 and M42 and also has an impressive existing rail network. Because of its excellent central location, the Black Country is a prime position for logistics businesses.
The Midlands logistics sector accounts for approximately 20% of UK jobs and GVA. Around 50,000 people are employed in this sector, and this accounts for 12% of employment in the Black Country.
As one might expect, the major concentrations of logistics activity are close to motorway junctions and other strategic transport networks and several global logistics organisations such as GeoPost UK Ltd (the second largest in the Courier Express Parcels market in Europe, employing 60,000 people and delivering 4 million parcels each day in more than 230 countries). Interlink Express Parcels Limited (recently rebranded ‘DPD Local’) one of the UK’s largest franchise operations delivering over 3 million parcels a day to over 230 countries worldwide, is also based here.
The Black Country is also fortunate enough to benefit from its proximity to Birmingham Airport, which is is the seventh-largest airport in the UK, third-largest outside London.
In 2015, 10.2 million passengers used Birmingham airport and consequently. It experienced a 21% growth in the number of long haul passengers, as more and more airlines fly to an increasing number of destinations from the airport. Birmingham airport boosts the economy by over £1 billion a year and in 2026 it is set to become the first and only airport in the UK to connect to HS2.
The Black Country is also part of Midlands Connect Partnership, which got underway in 2014. This partnership is a pillar of activity under the regional Midlands Engine and it is driving a strategy to improve connectivity across the Midlands in particular, East/West links, which will broaden access to markets, supply chains and labour, as well as being very beneficial to logistics operations.
